Celtic held fresh talks with Brighton this afternoon about signing defender Shane Duffy on loan, Football Insider understands.

Hoops chiefs met with their counterparts from the Premier League club, who travelled to Scotland this morning for a pre-season training camp in Dundee.

A Celtic source has told Football Insider that discussions took place a few hours ago in a bid to seal a breakthrough in their pursuit of Duffy.

Hoops manager Neil Lennon revealed last week his club have made "tentative enquiries" over a move for the 28-year-old.

He would prefer to join Celtic ahead of his other main suitors West Ham, Newcastle United and West Brom.

Celtic's interest has subsequently intensified as they try to get a loan deal over the finish line.

The Scottish giants do not currently have the cash to land him permanently as he is a major earner on a bigger salary than any current Hoops star.

The 10-in-a-row chasers have already signed striker Albian Ajeti for £4.5million rising to £6m and goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas for a further £4.5m.

Duffy has slipped down the pecking order at Brighton, where Lewis Dunk, who signed a new five-year contract last week, and Adam Webster have emerged as the first choice pairing.

Moreover, Graham Potter is able to call upon in-demand Ben White in the new season and centre-back-turned-left-back Dan Burn is on a key member of the side.
