Celtic have made a new left-back their top transfer priority this summer – a year after recruiting two senior players for the position.

A Hoops source has told Football Insider that Neil Lennon has made up his mind to strengthen on the left side of defence and has made that clear to club chiefs.

Director of football Nicky Hammond has been charged with putting together a shortlist of left-back targets ahead of the summer window.

This comes after Celtic signed Boli Bolingoli and Greg Taylor last summer following the £25million sale of Kieran Tierney to Arsenal.

Bolingoli, 24, was recruited last July from Rapid Vienna for around £3million, while Taylor, 22, signed on deadline day from Kilmarnock.

Former Belgium youth international Bolingoli began the season as first choice but suffered a slow start to his Hoops career before a good run of form in November.

He endured another below par run of performances in December, including the 2-1 derby defeat to Rangers before the winter break.

The club’s senior left-back has barely featured since his disappointing display in Celtic’s defeat against Rangers before the winter break.

Lennon has subsequently put his faith in Taylor and even preferred the versatile Jonny Hayes to Bolingoli.

Tellingly, the £3m man’s only senior action since the new year has come in the Scottish Cup against Clyde and he is stuck on 28 appearances for the season.

Taylor has now made 13 SPL starts among 21 appearances for the Hoops and become the first choice on the left in Lennon’s favoured 3-5-2 formation.
