Exclusive: Chelsea in advanced talks to agree new deal after breakthrough

Chelsea are in advanced talks with defender Reece James over a new deal, Football Insider can reveal.

The Premier League giants are working on tying the right-back, 20, to a long-term contract to replace his current agreement.

A Chelsea source has told Football Insider that discussions over a new five-year deal are progressing very well and the club are confident James will put pen to paper imminently following a breakthrough.

His current contract is due to expire in the summer of 2022.

James is starting to establish himself in the Chelsea first team after being promotion by manager Frank Lampard this season along with the likes of Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori.

Able to play anywhere in defence and even in midfield, the rising star has been used at right-back by Lampard and made his sixth start of the season in yesterday’s 2-0 FA Cup win over Nottingham Forest.

He also played the full 90 minutes in the 1-1 New Year’s Day draw against Brighton as he demonstrated his growing influence in Lampard’s team.

James has now made six starts among 17 appearances in all competitions for the Champions League outfit.

James has made the breakthrough at Chelsea after an outstanding season out on loan at Wigan Athletic last season.

The then-teenager swept the boards at Wigan’s end of season awards night and he was also named in the EFL Championship Team of the Year.
