Southampton attacker Josh Sims is set to be re-signed by Doncaster Rovers, Football Insider has learned.

The League One club are closing in on the signature of the winger, 23, after his successful loan in the first half of the campaign.

A Southampton source has told Football Insider that talks between Sims and Doncaster over a new loan running for the rest of the campaign are at an advanced stage.

It is expected they will beat QPR to the signature of the wide man and a deal will be tied up soon.

Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has given the green light to Sims heading back to Doncaster as he does not figure in his plans for this season.

Sims agreed a three-month loan at Rovers that came to an end on 16 January.

His return to the third-tier outfit effectively spells the end of his Southampton career as he is out of contract at the end of the season.

The versatile attacker spent last season on loan at New York Red Bulls in an initial half-season deal that was then extended for the rest of the campaign.

He returned to his parent club to find himself down the pecking order and joined Doncaster in mid-October.

The loan spell has been a success, with Sims scoring three goals and supplying an impressive seven assists from 14 matches in all competitions.

Sims has played 27 times for Southampton after graduating from their youth ranks but will almost certainly not now add to that tally.

He has been capped by England at Under-20s, Under-18s and Under 17s levels.
