Swansea City have made contact with Arsenal about a potential January deal for striker Folarin Balogun, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.
The Championship high flyers have turned their attention to the Gunners 19-year-old after their swoop for Southampton’s Michael Olafembi collapsed.
An Arsenal source has told Football Insider that Swansea have enquired about taking Balogun on loan for the rest of the season.
The “concrete” move comes amid speculation that Balogun could be heading out of the Emirates Stadium for good.
The teenager, regarded as one of the brightest youngsters to graduate from the Gunners’ academy in recent years, is out of contract at the end of the season.
Manager Mikel Arteta told the media in December that Balogun “wants to stay at the club so hopefully we can reach an agreement and extend his contract”.
Swansea are looking to give their promotion push a big lift in the January window by recruiting a rising-star striker on loan.
A deal had been agreed in principle with Southampton for Obafemi, 20, to join this month but that has been scuppered by an injury sustained in training.
Now, Steve Cooper’s second-placed side have swooped for Balogun, who has made five senior Arsenal appearances this season.
The England Under-20 international has already scored two senior goals, both in the Europa League, but is still waiting for his Premier League debut.
Arsenal fans are nervous about the prospect of Balogun leaving for good either in January or at the end of the season.
He can speak to non-English clubs this month about signing a pre-contract ahead of a summer transfer.
