Al-Gharafa have made a move to sign Aston Villa striker Jonathan Kodjia by next week, Football Insider can reveal.
The Qatari club, who are managed by ex-Fulham and Watford boss Slavisa Jokanovic, are keen to snap up a proven forward before the transfer deadline next Tuesday.
A Villa source has told Football Insider that have been in contact with Villa about a permanent deal for the 29-year-old.
Jokanovic is a big admirer of Kodjia after coming up against him when he was managing in England.
Kodjia, who is currently out injured, has made just one substitute appearance this season and is no longer a first choice in Dean Smith’s side.
But his versatility and ability to play across the forward line makes him a valuable asset and Villa are unlikely to be willing to cash in, as they can’t sign a replacement until January.
Kodjia has scored 29 goals in 98 appearances for the Midlands giants since signing from Bristol City in 2016 for a fee of around £15million.
He was a key player in last season’s promotion campaign even though on-loan Tammy Abraham was the first choice spearhead for most of the season.
Kodjia still weighed in with nine goals and four assists from 43 appearances, which included 22 starts in the Championship.
He is currently out with a fractured cheekbone sustained in a training-ground collision with team-mate Marvelous Nakamba.
In other Aston Villa news, it can be REVEALED that Dean Smith has given the green light for the club to sell one of his signings.
