'A gamble worth taking' - Exclusive: Mills reacts as Leeds reportedly set sights on PL veteran

Leeds United signing Billy Sharp from Sheffield United this month would be a “gamble worth taking” for the Whites, according to Danny Mills.

The former Leeds and England defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, says that his old side need a proven goalscorer to help fire them to the Premier League this season.

The Yorkshire Evening Post report that the 33-year-old striker is on the radar at Elland Road as the Whites look to fill the void left by Eddie Nketiah’s early departure back to Arsenal.

Mills says that a veteran striker like Sharp, with all his experience and lack of game time at Bramall Lane, could be perfect for Leeds this month – even if it means paying his Premier League wages.

Mills told Football Insider: “That’s what it’s all about, isn’t it? Someone that can put the ball into the back of the net, it’s invaluable.

“If you can get a player that’s maybe being on the bench or maybe not getting too many chances at first-team level in the Premier League, and wants a little bit of football, wants a chance to prove himself, that’s what they’ve got to go for.

“That’s what they have to get, if it’s a loan until the end of the season and they have to pay biggish wages, I think that’s a gamble worth taking.”

Sharp has started just two games this season, one of those coming in the Premier League, with one goal under his belt.

He has netted a total of 114 times in 322 Championship appearances, with experience in all four top-tiers of English football.

In other Leeds United news, Football Insider can reveal that the Whites have set their sights on another £50,000-a-week striker this month.
