Danny Mills has suggested that Arsenal could make a shock move to sign Tottenham defender Danny Rose if they fail in their attempts for Celtic’s Kieran Tierney.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former England and Manchester City defender says that the Spurs full-back will be looking for guaranteed playing time next season as he looks to cement his place in Gareth Southgate’s squad for Euro 2020.
Rose looked to be on the way out of Spurs this summer, with the club confirming he had been left out of their travelling squad to Asia to explore potential options with other clubs before the end of the transfer window.
However, Mills has suggested the 29-year-old could remain in north London even if he does leave Tottenham, with Arsenal looking for a new left-back at the Emirates Stadium.
As exclusively revealed by Football Insider, Arsenal are looking to poach Scotland and Celtic star Tierney in a deal which could total £45million, but Mills has backed the Gunners into making a shock raid for their arch-rivals’ star.
Mills told Football Insider: “He’ll want to play football and he’ll want to be first choice. You’ve got the Euros coming up next year, if he’s not playing that jeopardises his chances of making the Euros squad. It could be his last international tournament.
“If Arsenal can’t get Tierney, would they take Danny Rose? They should do. The Arsenal-Tottenham thing is of course always going to be an issue but they would take him. Manchester City, he’s probably a little bit old for the demographic they’re trying to bring in. Manchester United, Liverpool – they’re okay. Chelsea can’t sign him.
“Realistically, in terms of where he would want to go, they’d be up there challenging, in and around, what other London clubs could afford him?”
Rose has 198 appearances under his belt for Tottenham since joining from Leeds United, while he has also picked up 27 caps for England during his international career.
Last season saw him featured 37 times across all competitions as he battled it out with Ben Davies on the left side of the defence.
In other Arsenal news, Mills has claimed there is another new signing in the pipeline at the Gunners.
