Darren Bent has named West Ham defender Isaa Diop as the biggest disappointment at the London Stadium this season as he highlights the side’s defensive frailties.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Tottenham and England striker says that the Irons’ biggest weakness lies at the heart of the defence, insisting that they look well equipped when going forward.
Diop is among a number of players who have featured in every one of the club’s Premier League fixtures to date, with Angelo Ogbonna and Fabian Balbuena swapping in and out of the other starting role alongside the 22-year-old.
However, having singled out the centre-back area as the biggest problem so far this season, Bent has revealed he has been bitterly disappointed with what he has seen from Diop in east London, admitting it was tough to choose just one to come under criticism.
Asked who had been the biggest disappointment at the Hammers this season, Bent told Football Insider: “The centre backs, they’ve been so ropey at the back. It’s hard to single one of them out because they’ve all played their part.
“West Ham’s frailties are at the back, going forward they are okay. Diop’s played the most games, that’s what I was thinking. I’d say Diop.”
Diop has played every minute of the Hammers’ Premier League fixtures so far, conceding seven goals in total – five of those coming against Manchester City on the opening day of the season.
Manager Manuel Pellegrini has lined the 6ft 4in (Transfermarkt) colossus alongside Angelo Ogbonna for the last three games, dropping Balbuena to the bench for all but the League Cup victory over Newport County.
