Darren Bent has blasted West Ham left-back Arthur Masuaku as a “liability” as he bemoans Aaron Cresswell being left out the starting XI.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Aston Villa and England striker says that he is a big fan of the English full-back’s consistency and reliability, something he does not believe Masuaku possesses in defence.
Cresswell started the 5-0 defeat against Manchester City on the opening day of the season but was replaced by his 25-year-old teammate for the 1-1 draw against Brighton.
Bent says that he would prefer to see Cresswell starting ahead of the Democratic Republic of Congo international, suggesting the latter is lacking in defensive qualities.
Bent told Football Insider: “I like Cresswell, he’s quite reliable, he knows what he’s doing, every week he’ll give you a seven out of 10.
“I think Masuaku a bit of a liability, gets caught out of position way too much for my liking, not really great on the ball. For me, I like Cresswell, I’ve always liked him.”
Masuaku was in and out of the West Ham side last season, playing a total of 23 Premier League games as he battled it out with Cresswell for a place in the starting XI.
The former Ipswich man and three-cap England international played 20 times in the top flight for the Hammers, as well as appearing twice in the League Cup.
In other West Ham news, Football Insider can reveal the club are plotting a big-money contract offer.
