Darren Bent was blown away by the idea of Manchester United signing Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips as he believes he’d fit in at Old Trafford.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the former Aston Villa and Sunderland forward admitted he was baffled that Phillips wasn’t playing in the Premier League this season as he expected a top-flight side to poach him from Leeds in the summer.
The Sun reported on Sunday that Man United were scouting Phillips as they plan for next season and even claimed that United assistant Mike Phelan personally checked the midfielder out during the 1-0 win over Birmingham City.
Bent shared he thought Man United would be onto a winner if they could sign Phillips and even suggested he believes they’re interested as he pointed out he fits into the type of side Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is trying to build.
When asked whether Phillips would be a good signing for Manchester United, Bent told Football Insider: “Yeah that would be a good signing.
“I’ve said this before but I still can’t believe he is not playing in the Premier League side that’s how good he is, I thought Tottenham or Aston Villa may get him in the summer but that didn’t happen.
“But yeah he fits into what Man United are trying to build, young, hungry players and what a signing he could be if they get a deal done as he is a very talented player.”
Phillips has played 16 times for Marcelo Bielsa’s side across all competitions this season and has contributed one goal as well as an assist to the cause.
The 23-year-old has been at Elland Road for his whole career and is contracted to stay at the club until 2024 after signing a new long-term deal in September.
