Exclusive: Darren Bent claims 'Brilliant' colossus could force big-name Tottenham exit

Darren Bent claims that Tottenham goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga is causing Mauricio Pochettino a real problem with his impressive performances between the sticks.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Spurs and England striker admits that the Argentine shot-stopper has dazzled in place of Hugo Lloris, the Frenchman currently ruled out with an elbow injury.

Gazzaniga had appeared just twice prior to his teammate’s injury blow but now has six appearances under his belt this season, including a Champions League outing versus Red Star Belgrade.

Having impressed between the sticks since stepping in, Bent says that the 27-year-old has given his manager a real dilemma and suggests that it could result in a transfer out of north London.

Bent told Football Insider: “He was brilliant (v Liverpool). He made save after save after save, there’s not really a lot more that he could have done.

“It was quite encouraging signs for Pochettino because depending on how long Lloris is going to be out, Gazzaniga could string a few results together, a few good performances then you’d like to think he could end up keeping that spot and letting Lloris go.

“If Gazzaniga keeps putting in these type of performances, I don’t think it’s something you can ignore. If he did okay and had a few lapses (then maybe not). Everything he did, he did it with purpose and he did himself justice. He made some great saves.”

Gazzaniga, who stands at a giant 6ft 4in [Transfermarkt] has just 18 games to his name for Spurs despite being in his third season with the north Londoners, Lloris very much Pochettino’s number one option between the sticks.

The Frenchman’s injury also saw Michel Vorm return to the club, signing a new contract after becoming a free agent in the summer.
