Darren Bent claims that Leeds United defender Gaetano Berardi could be the club’s best defender if it was not for his hot-headed nature.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Aston Villa and England striker says that the Swiss international has the quality and bravery to be considered the top defender at Elland Road but that his discipline lets him down.
Berardi was sent off for a trip on Tom Bradshaw in Saturday’s clash at the Den, although replays suggest there was little to no contact between the players.
With eight red cards during his career at Elland Road, Bent boldly claims that the 31-year-old could be the club’s number one defender if he could sort out his disciplinary issues.
Bent told Football Insider: “I like Berardi, I think he’s a very, very good defender but we’ve seen already, as he did in the second-leg of the play-offs last season, getting himself sent off, he can be a hot head.
“As a defender, I think he’s a very good defender. He probably could be their best defender but sometimes you can’t trust him. He’s a bit of a hot head, can fly into challenges and can get himself sent off.
“If he can curb that, I think Leeds will be okay because I think he’s their best defender.”
Berardi has acted as backup to Ben White and Liam Cooper this season, the Swiss star stepping in for the Scottish international after he was ruled out of action through injury for six weeks.
The 31-year-old has six appearances under his belt so far in the 2019/20 campaign, with a total of 136 games to his name for Leeds.
