Darren Bent boldly claimed that Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli was arguably England’s best midfielder based on recent form.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs striker suggested that Jose Mourinho had managed to get Alli playing so well that he is actually now his country’s best midfield option.
The 23-year-old Spurs player has been left out of Gareth Southgate’s last three England squads, with his last appearance for his nation coming against Switzerland in June.
Bent explained that he thought Alli had benefitted from Mourinho whispering in his ear and revealed he would have been intrigued if Southgate had to name an England squad next week.
When asked if Alli’s display against Bournemouth confirmed he was back to his best, Bent told Football Insider: “He’s getting back there and it looks to me as if Mourinho has come in and whispered in his ear and has said something about believing in him, and asked what’s been going on with you? You’re a top player.
“And Alli has taken that on board, and Mourinho now won’t be able to take him out.
“I’d really be intrigued if there was an England squad being named next week, would he be back in it, as I’d think he would, as arguably since Mourinho has come in, he has been England’s best midfielder.”
Alli has scored two Premier League goals as well as assisted one across the first two league games Mourinho has been in charge of.
The 23-year-old saw the start of his 2019-20 campaign disputed due to a hamstring injury, with him being unavailable for the first two league games of the season due to the complaint.
