Darren Bent has revealed he was certain that Ryan Kent would be returning to Rangers from Liverpool as Leeds United launch a bid to sign the winger before Thursday’s deadline.
The former Aston Villa and England star, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, says that he thought the 22-year-old’s impressive loan spell at Ibrox last season would see him head north of the border once again
As exclusively revealed by Football Insider, Leeds have tabled a bid for the Liverpool winger and remain in negotiations with the Premier League giants over securing a late transfer deal.
Bent admits that the Whites’ offer has shocked him after believing he was destined for Ibrox, but says that he would be joining another giant of British football at Elland Road.
Bent told Football Insider: “Yeah, it is really surprising. I thought he was definitely going to go back to Rangers because it was familiar for him.
“I kind of thought he knew he was comfortable there, familiar with the surroundings. He’s obviously thinking if he opts for Leeds, that’s where he believes he is going to play his best football, he’s seen something in the squad there that he feels he can fit in really well.
“It’s a massive club with great tradition and he is very exciting, this could be a massive season for them.”
Kent was a star for Steven Gerrard last season, playing 43 times, scoring six goals and setting up nine assists across all competitions to earn him the SPFA’s Young Player of the Year award.
However, he has still only played one competitive game for Liverpool after five successive spells away on loan.
