Exclusive: Darren Bent rips into 'Mentally soft' Tottenham stars after training ground report
Darren Bent has suggested that a number of Tottenham players are “mentally soft” after claims of unrest on the training ground.
The former Spurs and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, says that the Lilywhites’ squad were “babied” under Mauricio Pochettino.
It is reported that a number of Tottenham players are unhappy and frustrated with Jose Mourinho’s methods on the training ground, with the feeling they are regressing under the Portuguese boss.
Bent says that he thinks there is a definite mental weakness to the squad, which could be exposed in Mourinho’s incredibly demanding hunt for perfection.
“We knew if things weren’t going to go well, this was what was going to come out – that the players are unhappy and unhappy with his methods,” Bent told Football Insider.
“Saying that, I think some of those guys in the squad are just mentally soft, one thing we know about Mourinho is he won’t put up with mediocre. At some stage, at some times over the last couple of seasons with Spurs it’s been too much of that ‘nearly’ mentality.

“They were ‘nearly’ a good team, they ‘almost’ won the Champions League without actually doing anything. I think Mourinho is sick and tired of that title of being ‘nearly’. If that means upsetting one or two and telling them a few home truths, he’s going to do that.”
Tottenham sit sixth in the Premier League table after their 2-1 win over Norwich on Wednesday evening, level on points with Manchester United and Wolves.
Their next game sees them take on Southampton in the FA Cup, before hosting Manchester City in their next league clash.
In other Tottenham news, Darren Bent has urged one Spurs star to make a move to Newcastle United this month.
