Darren Bent has savaged Arsenal’s “awful” defence as he claims the Gunners desperately need at least two new signings through the door before Thursday’s transfer deadline.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs striker, who is actually a supporter of the Lilywhites’ north London rivals, says that the backline is a massive weakness for Unai Emery heading into the new season.
This summer has seen centre back William Saliba sign from St Etienne only to be loaned back to the French side for the 2019/20 campaign, with Lauren Koscielny and Krystian Bielik both permanently leaving the Emirates Stadium.
Bent says that Emery needs at least two new signings to bolster his defence, with less than 24 hours until the transfer window slams shut in England.
He told Football Insider: “I don’t quite know what Arsenal are doing to be honest. Koscielny’s gone to Bordeaux, Mustafi is being linked with a move elsewhere as well.
“They need to bring in players desperately because they’re being linked with forwards when they’re already top heavy – they’ve got Ceballos there, Aubameyang there, Lacazette there, Ozil is still there, Iwobi’s there.
“They need to start building from the back forward. They’ve got the goalkeeper sorted, Leno’s a great goalkeeper, but the back four’s awful. They shift goals left, right and centre. I’d like to think Unai Emery’s got something up his sleeve where hopefully two defenders coming in today.”
The club’s last competitive game saw them thrashed by Chelsea in the Europa League final with a back three of Nacho Monreal, Laurent Koscielny and Sokratis, Sead Kolasinac and Ainsley Maitland-Niles playing as wing-backs.
Emery also has the likes of Calum Chambers and Hector Bellerin to call upon at the back.
In other Arsenal news, it can be REVEALED that a big-name club have made a late move to sign one of the club’s most exciting attackers.
