Darren Bent tore into Leeds United defender Liam Cooper following his performance against Preston North End.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the former England international admitted Cooper would be a concern for the Whites in the Premier League due to how often he makes mistakes.
The 28-year-old Whites centre-back played the full 90 minutes of Leeds’ 1-1 draw with Preston and played the full 90 minutes of their 2-1 loss to Fulham.
Bent acknowledged that Cooper had played well at times over the years, but suggested he always has a mistake in him.
When asked about Cooper making rash decisions and mistakes against Preston, Bent told Football Insider: “Whenever I watch Cooper, he’s got that in him.
“I’ve seen him throughout the years always make mistakes, yeah he’s a good captain, a good leader and most of the time he plays really well.
“But every game there is a lapse in concentration, sometimes they get punished, sometimes they don’t.
“Sometimes he’ll try to force the ball into midfield with a pass, he gives it away.
“So for me…hmmm when it comes to Liam Cooper…I’m a little bit sceptical but he has been there a long time, he has played well at times, he is their captain so you obviously have to stick with him.
“But if Leeds have any aspirations of going up, these lapses in concentration would concern me.
“You can’t be making these mistakes, in the Championship, yeah you can get away with them but when in the Premier League, if you make mistakes like that, you’ll get punished.”
Cooper has played 17 times across all competitions this season for the Whites, with him missing only a handful of league games due to injury.
The Scotland international has made 177 appearances for the Whites since arriving at Elland Road from Chesterfield FC in 2014.
In other Leeds United news, Whelan says that the criticism of one Elland Road ace is hugely unfair.
