Darren Bent has tipped Norwich City or Sheffield United to sign Kalvin Phillips before the transfer window shuts next week.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-England striker explained he is a massive admirer of the Leeds United midfielder and believes he deserves to be playing in the Premier League.
Aston Villa have made attempts to sign Phillips this summer, but Leeds have snubbed their interest so far and they have subsequently brought in two midfield anchormen in Douglas Luiz and Marvelous Nakamba.
There has yet to be a resolution over Phillips’ future after he rejected a new contract offer from Leeds earlier in the summer.
“I’m a big fan of Kalvin Phillips, I think he’s brilliant” Bent told Football Insider. “He is too good for the Championship and deserves to be playing in the Premier League. He was probably Leeds’ best player last season and one of the best in the division.
“I can’t see him going to Aston Villa now, as they’ve brought in two new defensive midfielders and I can’t see them signing a third, even though it’s such an important position these days.
“I would love to see him in the Premier League this season, and he’d be brilliant for one of the two other new boys, Sheffield United and Norwich. I can see one of them getting him. It would need to be a big bid to get him this late in the day.”
Phillips has played a full part for United in pre-season and is expected to start their Championship opener away to Bristol City on Sunday.
He has two years remaining on his Leeds contract and is a lifelong fan of the club who has progressed through the youth ranks to establish himself in the first team.
