Exclusive: Dier tipped for big Tottenham role after double contract reveal
Danny Mills has tipped Eric Dier to replace Jan Vertonghen if, as expected, the Belgian leaves Tottenham this summer.
The former Leeds and Manchester City right-back, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed the 26-year-old’s versatility is a “big bonus” for Jose Mourinho.
Vertonghen, 31, is out-of-contract this summer and his exit appears an inevitability having rejected a one-year contract extension.
In contrast, Dier is expected to open talks on a contract extension at Spurs as he enters the final year of his current deal, Football Insider understands.
Mills insists the England international has a crucial role to play given Mourinho’s defensive style.
“It benefits him that he is a utility player,” he told Football Insider. “He has experience in those positions.

“That is a big bonus for him and sometimes you need squad players. You need a player like Dier in and around the squad.
“If they are going to lose Vertonghen, without a shadow of a doubt, you need somebody that can slot in when and needs be.
“He does not seem like the sort of player that causes issues, so there is no reason why you would not want to keep hold of a player of that calibre.
“Inevitably he will be a squad player and play 20 odd games a season and he will benefit from Mourinho liking to play defensively.”
Dier, who has made 25 appearances in all competitions this season, was preferred by former manager Mauricio Pochettino in holding midfield.
Prior to the suspension of fixtures, Mourinho utilised the Englishman as part of a back-three.
