Everton are set to miss out on Lille defender Gabriel Magalhaes despite agreeing personal terms, Football Insider can reveal.
The Merseysiders have been pursuing the 22-year-old for months but the deal is now on the verge of collapsing.
An Everton source has told Football Insider that the club have been unable to agree a fee with Lille for Magalhaes.
The French club have been holding out for nearly £30million for the Brazilian and had been hopeful of achieving that given the interest in him.
But Everton are ready to pull out of he deal because they believe he is over-priced.
The Merseysiders have offered over £20m for Gabriel and suggested a number of performance-related options to get close to Lille’s asking price.
But the deal is now collapsing even though the Premier League club already offered a lucrative five-year contract to Magalhaes that has been provisionally accepted.
Magalhaes has been targeted by Everton’s recruitment team after having the best of his three years at Lille before the French season was terminated in April.
He made 34 appearances this season as his side finished fourth in Ligue 1 and six in the Champions League as they ended bottom of a strong group that included Valencia, Chelsea and Ajax.
The left footed centre-back has previously had spells on loan at Troyes and Dinamo Zagreb.
