Everton have had a bid for Carlisle United defender Jarrad Branthwaite rejected, Football Insider can reveal.
The centre-back, 17, has caught the eye of a string of Premier League clubs as well as both Glasgow giants after breaking into the League Two club’s starting XI this season.
An Everton source has told Football Insider the club have looked to steal a march on their rivals by submitting a formal offer for Branthwaite.
But Carlisle have snubbed the bid as they do not feel it does not consist of enough cash up front for the defender.
The fourth-tier club are expecting more offers to come in for Branthwaite, who is also attracting strong interest from Leicester City, Newcastle, Aston Villa and Scottish duo Celtic and Rangers.
Branthwaite is under contract with Carlisle until the summer of 2021.
But the north-west club are resigned to losing their talented teenager this month due to the big interest in his services, which has seen scouts head to Blundell Park to make regular checks on him this season.
He has made 14 appearances in all competitions so far this season, all of which have been in the starting XI.
The 17-year-old is Carlisle youngest-ever goalscorer after netting against Morecambe in the EFL Trophy last month.
He signed a two-year contract with an option at the end of February 2019, which ties him to Carlisle for another 18 months.
