Everton are setting their sights on Kalvin Phillips ahead of the January window, sources have told Football Insider.

The midfielder, 29, made his first Man City appearance in nearly two years last month but does not figure in Pep Guardiola's long-term plans.

On Tuesday (7 October), Football Insider revealed that Phillips looks set to depart the Etihad in the January transfer window.

As a permanent move will be difficult to pull off for interested clubs, the former England international could leave on an initial loan deal.

Kalvin Phillips on Everton's midfielder shortlist

Sources say Everton have an active interest in Phillips going into the winter window as they assess the market for central midfielders.

David Moyes' side have had a good start to the season, sitting eighth in the Premier League after seven games of the new campaign.

It was a fruitful summer window for Everton, and new signings Jack Grealish and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall have struck up a great partnership in attack.

The Toffees will look to strengthen again in January, in order to continue their strong form, and Phillips is one of the names on their transfer shortlist.

Phillips still has time to get back to his best

Philips moved from Leeds United to Man City at the end of the 2021/22 campaign, but it is no exaggeration to say that his time in Manchester has been a disaster.

The Englishman was branded “overweight” by Guardiola during his first pre-season at the club, and the situation has failed to improve since then.

In total, Phillips has made just 16 Premier League appearances for City across his three campaigns at the club, and has never managed to establish himself in the matchday squad, let alone the starting lineup.

However, a move to Everton could give the 29-year-old a new lease of life and a way to revitalise his career.
