Arne Slot's role in Ryan Gravenberch’s stunning Liverpool transformation can be revealed today, sources have told Football Insider.

The Premier League giants failed to sign Martin Zubimendi during the summer transfer window, which led to the new Liverpool boss backing the 22-year-old Netherlands international instead for the team's midfield anchorman position.

The Reds had agreed a fee for Zubimendi, but even though personal terms were also agreed he decided against the move at the eleventh hour.

It forced a change of tack from Slot, who decided to put his faith in his countryman and a player he had known for a decade stretching back to Dutch youth football.

Sources with knowledge of the situation have told Football Insider that Slot told Gravenberch “you are my main man” for the number six role.

Slot recalled how well Gravenberch had played in a deeper role aged 14-16 while in the Ajax youth system, and is believed to have told him, "This is your position, I believe in you."

Before the season started it was seen as a surprise decision considering Gravenberch had been used in a more advanced role last season by Jurgen Klopp in his debut Liverpool campaign as well as by his former club Bayern Munich.

Arne Slot’s trust in Ryan Gravenberch has paid off for Liverpool

But he has been revelation in his new position, starting and finishing all seven of Liverpool's Premier League and Champions League fixtures so far.

The midfielder impressed was awarded the man of the match in Liverpool's recent 2-1 win against Wolves, with no player winning more duels or tackles, while his passing accuracy was above 95 per cent.

According to Opta, Gravenberch became the first Premier League midfielder since 2012 to contest more than five duels in a match with a 100 per cent success rate.
