Alan Hutton has offers on the table from Hull City, Nottingham Forest and Wigan Athletic as he weighs up his future following his exit from Aston Villa, Football Insider can reveal.
The Championship trio have each offered offered contracts to the full-back, 34, who is a man in demand after being made available for a free transfer this month.
Football Insider revealed on Saturday that Hutton had agreed terms and even undergone a medical at Wigan, but Forest and Hull have subsequently tried to hijack them in the chase.
Forest offered an improved deal, and a source with knowledge of the player’s situation has told Football Insider that Hull have now climbed into pole position to land the former Tottenham and Rangers defender.
Villa announced at the start of June that Hutton was leaving the club when his contract expired at the end of the month even though he made 33 league starts among 34 appearances last season.
The newly-promoted Premier League club decided not to take a number of proven performers with them into the top flight, with Hutton and Glenn Whelan among the notable departures.
The veteran defender won over the Holte End after a difficult start to his Villa career and was a firm favourite with supporters by the end of his eight-year spell.
His vast experience accumulated in the Premier League, Championship and Scottish Premiership, as well as at international level for Scotland, is very attractive to second-tier clubs.
Hutton’s future will now be decided this week as he look to wrap up a transfer before joining his new club in pre-season training.
In other Aston Villa news, it can be REVEALED that the club have opened preliminary talks to sign a £17.5million player.
