Alan Hutton admits he is “really excited” to see Calvin Bassey in action after the left-back’s move from Leicester City to Rangers.

The former Gers and Scotland full-back, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, has heard the defender can also slot in to the left sided centre-back role.

Rangers confirmed the 20-year-old’s capture on Saturday, with Football Insider, who broke the news of his signing, revealing that the club believe they have managed to sign a £3million player for a £300,000 compensation fee.

Hutton believes that the combination of Bassey’s age and the relatively low fee makes his capture a “win-win” for Steven Gerrard and admits he cannot wait to see him play for the Light Blues.

Hutton told Football Insider: “It was a definite must, they needed somebody to come in. At 20-years-of-age he’s definitely one for the future but I’ve heard he can also play left centre-half. There’s options there.

“I’ve watched some clips of him and seen what he’s about, he looks big and strong, decent pace about him so he’s got all the attributes to be a modern day full-back. He looks really exciting, looks like he loves driving forward and making things happen.

“I think it’s a win-win with the fee being so low and him being so young, it’s a great deal that Rangers have got. This is the thing with the players moving across the border, the fees are relatively low.

“I’m sure all the fans have looked him up and are really excited to see him play.”

Rangers have let two players who featured at left-back this season – Andy Halliday and Jon Flanagan – leave on free transfers this summer.

Their departures mean that Borna Barisic is the only senior option on the left-hand side of the defence, with the Croatian establishing himself as a mainstay in the side this season.

In other Rangers news, Darren Bent has been blown away by “humongous news” coming out of Ibrox.
