Kalvin Phillips is destined for the Premier League “one way or another” after his latest Leeds United masterclass, according to Alan Hutton.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Aston Villa, Tottenham and Rangers defender explained why Phillips is a midfield anchorman destined for the top.
The 23-year-old produced another polished performance today as Leeds failed to make their excellent first-half performance count in a 1-1 draw against Derby County at home.
Phillips signed a new, five-year contract with his hometown club earlier this month after £20million-plus interest from Premier League clubs during the summer, including Villa.
“I like Phillips, I think what he does it’s one of those players where you go a little bit unnoticed,” Hutton told Football Insider. “What he does for the team actually allows them to build and go forward and be the team that they are, especially as attacking as they play.
“Villa were seemingly interested in him as well and you can see why. He’s heading for the Premier League one way or another.
“I think sometimes as a footballer you can see some of the work that people do that goes a little bit unnoticed and I don’t mean that he goes unnoticed, that’s not what I’m saying, he does a specific job for the team that really helps them play the way they want to play.”
Phillips has now played the full 90 minutes of all eight of Leeds’ Championship matches this season as well as in both their League Cup fixtures.
United’s win today takes them to 17 points out of a possible 24, one ahead of Swansea City, who were due to kick-off at 3pm away to Bristol City.
