Exclusive: Hutton raves as Rangers star makes 'Massive' claim over new signing

Alan Hutton believes Jermain Defoe’s comments will have given new Rangers signing Calvin Bassey a “massive” confidence boost ahead of his move to Ibrox.

The former Gers defender and boyhood fan of the club, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, has tipped the youngster for big things as he prepares for a move to Glasgow this summer.

Speaking to Rangers TV, Defoe revealed his excitement about the 20-year-old after both watching clips and coming up against him in a friendly match in November 2019.

The veteran striker went on to claim that the young defender, along with Ianis Hagi, has a “massive” part to play for the Gers next season.

Hutton believes that the hitman’s words will give the promising left-back a huge lift ahead of what is a “daunting” move to Rangers.

Asked just how much of a confidence boost Defoe’s comments will have had on Bassey, Hutton told Football Insider: “Of course, it’s massive. I think as a young player especially you love reading positive press.

“I think as a young guy, looking at someone like Defoe saying some really nice words about you, it’s only going to spur you on to keep going and do well and really give you that lift of confidence that you need.

“It can be a little bit daunting coming into such a big team, even though you are a good player it’s unfamiliar surroundings. It’s nice to get that backing from the players before you start.

“We were the same, we watched clips and stuff – he’s probably done the same and Rangers played a behind-closed-doors game not so long ago so he’s maybe seen him there. It’s all positive, I definitely think he’s going to be one to watch this season.”

Defoe told RangersTV: “Calvin Bassey, I’m looking forward to him coming up. I’ve seen some clips of him and obviously there was the friendly game at Ibrox last season that he played in so great potential.

“I’m looking forward to seeing these young players and I’m sure those two names mentioned (Bassey and Ianis Hagi) will be massive for us this season in trying to achieve something special.”
