Tottenham may sign just one senior centre-back this summer due to a reduced transfer budget and Jose Mourinho’s growing faith in Eric Dier, Football Insider has learned.
The long-serving Spur has got the nod ahead of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen to start both the club’s matches since the restart.
A Tottenham source has told Football Insider that initial plans to bring in two senior central defenders are likely to now be binned in favour of just one, a replacement for exit-bound Jan Vertonghen.
An emerging centre-back could also come in to replace squad man Juan Foyth, who is keen to quit after three years at the club.
Vertonghen’s exit will pave the way for a new left sided centre-back to be signed.
But the Covid-19 pandemic means Mourinho won’t have a huge budget to work with, unless Spurs can first sell some of the team’s fringe stars.
The re-emergence of Dier, 26, in defence either side of the lockdown could solve a major problem for the club.
Mourinho has been tasked with finding internal solutions to the team strengthening and club chiefs believe the England international could save them £40million.
Dier is out of contract in a year’s time and had appeared set for the exit this summer.
But the early signs are positive that an agreement can be reached over a new long-term contract.
Football Insider revealed earlier this month that talks have begun over a new deal following a change of heart from the hierarchy due to the pandemic.
A combination of injuries, illness and mixed form has seen him drop down the pecking order over the last two years.
But he has now started Spurs’ last four Premier League matches in central defence, including alongside Davinson Sanchez in both games since the restart.
In other Tottenham news, it can be REVEALED that the club are working on three new deals and offers are on the table.
