Exclusive: Keith Hackett explodes at FA over ‘unacceptable’ Man United star
Man United striker Joshua Zirkzee avoiding a ban for his “totally unacceptable” celebration against Southampton is sending the wrong message to youngsters, Keith Hackett has said.
The former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA official argued that grassroots players often imitate what professionals do, making it crucial for the FA to “advise referees on whether to sanction or ignore” such actions.
The Red Devils were just ten minutes from defeat before an incredible late hat-trick from Amad turned the game around, securing all three points on 16 January.
However, Zirkzee’s controversial celebration following one of the goals became the talking point, with Hackett convinced it warranted a fine and likely a ban.
Man United and Joshua Zirkzee escape punishment
The Dutch striker was brought on early in the second half to replace Rasmus Hojlund. His team were already trailing 1-0 after a Manuel Ugarte own goal.
His performance added a much-needed fluidity to United’s frontline. Fans had begun to doubt his future at Old Trafford after he was subbed off in the first half against Newcastle. But this display could mark a turning point in his season if he can maintain consistency.

However, controversy overshadowed his contributions. During the celebrations for one of Amad’s goals, Zirkzee turned to the crowd and grabbed his crotch. Hackett described the gesture as a “crude” celebration.
Reacting to the news that Zirkzee will not face punishment, the former referee told Football Insider:
“Once again the Football Association deliver the wrong message to football players across the country.
“Manchester United’s Joshua Zirkzee’s very crude celebration which frankly was totally unacceptable is NOT going to receive a sanction.
“Players at grassroots level have a habit of copying what they see Premier League players do.
“So when it happens at grassroots level having seen no sanction issued by The FA please advise referees if they sanction or ignore.
“Come on, you are the gatekeepers of the game and youngsters attending matches should be protected.”
Man United now sit 12th in the Premier League after ending a run of four league games without a win. Their attention will now turn to a tough fixture against Brighton on 19 January at Old Trafford.
