Exclusive: Kevin Phillips blown away by Rangers 'kid' he tips to replace Morelos full-time
Kevin Phillips claimed Florian Kamberi can “step into” Alfredo Morelos’ shoes permanently after the loan “kid” led the line impressively in Rangers’ last two matches.
The former Sunderland and Southampton striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, suggested the 24-year-old has enough quality to replace the 24-year-old was Morelos was to move away from Ibrox this summer.
Kamberi spearheaded the Gers attack on Thursday night as they beat Braga 1-0 at the Estadio Municipal to progress to the last 16 of the Europa League.
At first, it appeared to be a frustrating night for the visitors, as they missed a host of chances including an Ianis Hagi penalty in first-half stoppage time.
The only goal of the game came on the hour mark. Ryan Kent breaking free of the Braga back-line to slot past the superb Matheus for the winner.
When asked for his assessment of the Albanian’s start to life at Ibrox, Phillips told Football Insider: “When your top striker is out someone needs to step up and try to hit the ground running and score goals. The goal at the weekend, having come to a club the size of Rangers, will have done the kid’s confidence the world of good.

“It highlights again that Steve and his recruitment department are recruiting players who have got quality and to challenge Celtic he needs to try and identify players that are going to improve the squad.
“If Morelos was to move on it looks like he could step into his shoes. It is a good signing.”
The January arrival scored his first goal for the Teddy Bears in last weekend’s disappointing 2-2 draw away to St. Johnstone.
Kamberi signed on loan last month from Hibernian where he scored 30 goals in 84 appearances.
