Kevin Phillips has claimed “everyone knows” that Steven Gerrard will succeed Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool but suggested he may quit Rangers for “another “big club first”.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-England striker and Premier League coach is in doubt that the Liverpool icon will move on from Ibrox sooner rather than later.
Gerrard has transformed the fortunes of the Glasgow giants since taking over in the summer of 2018.
He signed a two-year contract extension last month which will keep him at Rangers until the summer of 2024.
But Phillips does not see the 39-year-old staying at Ibrox that long.
He told Football Insider: “Of course at some point he’s going to be the Liverpool manager, isn’t he, and I think everyone knows that. Klopp knows that.
“Steven’s learning his trade and the big thing is, for me, if he was to not win the title this year, come second, or if they did and he has another year at Rangers, where does he go
“Because it looks like Klopp could be at Liverpool for years. I can see another big club coming in for Steven at the end of the season because he’s doing such a good job.”
Gerrard has taken Rangers to new heights this season, in which they are pushing champions Celtic all the way in what is shaping up to be a thrilling title chase.
The Light Blues have yet to win any silverware under him but they have improved significantly and have also reached the knockout stages of this season’s Europa League.
In other Rangers news, it can be REVEALED that the club have opened preliminary talks to sign West Brom starlet.
