Kevin Phillips claims “it is only a matter of time” before Alfredo Morelos leaves Rangers despite the Colombian scoring a brace against Kilmarnock today.
The 2000 European Golden Shoe winner, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, suggested that last week’s two forward signings were an indication that the 24-year-old was to exit Ibrox this summer.
Morelos grabbed two second half goals today as the Gers followed up a 1-0 victory at Aberdeen with a comfortable 3-0 win over St Mirren at Ibrox.
The club announced the signings of two strikers on Tuesday, after Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten both put pen to paper on four-year deals with the Glasgow giants.
Phillips is adamant that Morelos will have left Steven Gerrard’s side by the time the transfer window closes on the 5th of October.
“I would say it is only a matter of time,” he told Football Insider.
“I would imagine there is a lot going on in the background. You do not make two signings like that unless something is happening.
“I would not be surprised if he moves on in the next week or so. Whether that be to a Premier League or abroad I do not know.
“I would not say that his days are numbered but I do not imagine he will be a Rangers player at the end of this transfer window.”
However, Gerrard gave no indication that Morelos was to leave this week when speaking to Sky Sports after today’s win: “Even the best strikers go through barren spells and goals help. It brings back belief and confidence and I’m sure those goals will do him the world of good.
“He just needs to recover now and get himself ready for Wednesday.”
