Exclusive: Kevin Phillips makes big claim about Everton player savaged by many fans
Kevin Phillips insisted Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford should still be England’s number one despite a number of high profile errors this season.
The former Sunderland and West Brom striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, tipped the 25-year-old to “bounce back” from his recent poor form.
Pickford gifted Manchester United their equaliser on Sunday after Dominic Calvert-Lewin had opened the scoring for the hosts.
Bruno Fernandes struck powerfully from the edge of the area but the former Sunderland goalie allowed the ball to dip underneath him and into the net to level the scores a 1-1.
This prompted a deluge of criticism from angry and frustrated Everton fans, as well as from neutrals.
When asked whether Pickford was still England’s number one going into this summer’s Euros, Phillips told Football Insider: “I like Jordan. I think he has got a great mentality and is a great character – he will bounce back.

“Jordan is in a position where he makes one mistake and he gets scrutinised because he is England’s number one. There is always going to be criticism. He has to eradicate the mistakes but he knows that and there will be no one more critical of himself than him.
“He still has my backing. He has got the right mentality and for me, that is one of the reasons I would stick for him in the summer because he has been to a major tournament and he knows what it is all about.”
The England number one has only managed to keep six clean sheets in 28 Premier League appearances so far this term, conceding 42 goals.
Sheffield United shot-stopper Dean Henderson has earned plaudits for his performances in the Premier League this season but is still waiting for his first England cap.
In other Everton news, Kevin Phillips has told Football Insider latest off-field development is “huge” for the club.
