'Got a bit of flair' - Exclusive: Kevin Phillips raves over Newcastle star who started v Oxford

Kevin Phillips has been left raving over Nabil Bentaleb after his move to Newcastle United.

The former Sunderland and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, says that the 25-year-old has something to offer the Magpies and that he should be ready to hit the ground running.

Newcastle confirmed the loan arrival of the Algerian international in midweek, the Algerian international making his debut in Saturday’s FA Cup clash against Oxford United.

Having seen what the midfielder had to offer at his time at Tottenham, Phillips says he should be a good addition to the squad at St James’ Park, calling him a “safe signing”.

Phillips told Football Insider: “He’s got a bit of flair about him, he’s got that Premier League experience – they wouldn’t have made that signing if they didn’t think he could come in and make an impact.

“He’s a player that’s fit and ready to go and will need to hit the ground running, again it will challenge other players to make sure they perform. A little competition doesn’t do anyone harm.

“I think that’s a safe signing and we saw glimpses at Tottenham he is a good player so hopefully Steve can get the best out of him.”

Bentaleb played 66 times for Tottenham during his time in north London, 46 of those appearances coming in the Premier League.

He featured in just under 100 games for Schalke but had failed to play at all this season.

In other Newcastle United news, Kevin Phillips has suggested that the Magpies could pull off a “big-money” deal late in the transfer window.
