Kevin Phillips has claimed that Jon McLaughlin will be a “great signing” for Rangers after the shot-stopper joined from Sunderland on Tuesday.
The Black Cats idol, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, tipped the 32-year-old to put pressure on Allan McGregor for the number one jersey next season.
The club confirmed the capture of the former Hearts goalkeeper on a free transfer 24 hours after their interest had been exclusively revealed by Football Insider.
McLaughlin, who kept 11 clean sheets in 32 appearances for the Black Cats last season, put pen to paper on a two-year deal at Ibrox after snubbing a new Sunderland contract.
Phillips believes the Scotland international’s experience of playing in the Play Off final stands him in good stead to succeed in Glasgow.
“Steven is delighted to have signed him,” he told Football Insider.
“He’s got experience in Scotland and he has the experience of playing in big games in England like the Play Off final and the EFL Trophy final. He has big game experience and every time Rangers play they are under pressure.
“A great addition to the squad because he will put pressure on McGregor. If McGregor gets injured McLaughlin will come in and do just as good a job.
“I think it is a great signing from Stevie.”
Phillips’ upbeat verdict on the new Ibrox capture will certainly delight Rangers fans given his expert Sunderland knowledge.
McLaughlin becomes Steven Gerrard’s third senior recruit of the summer after permanent deals for Ianis Hagi and Calvin Bassey.
In other Rangers news, it can be REVEALED that Ivan Toney has told friends his plans this summer.
