Exclusive: Leeds agree six-figure fee as they fend off Southampton to close in on new signing

EXCLUSIVE By Pete O’Rourke

Leeds United are close to signing highly-rated attacker Stuart McKinstry after agreeing a £400,000 fee with his club Motherwell, Football Insider understands.

The Yorkshire giants have been locked in a battle with a number of clubs for the 16-year-old, who was called up to the Scotland Under-17s squad for three European qualifying clashes during the current international break.

A Leeds source has told Football Insider that the club have now beaten off Southampton to agree terms with Motherwell for the son ex-Motherwell player John McKinstry.

The deal is worth £400,000 including add-ons, although United will not pay that sum up front.

The Championship promotion hopefuls will now look to finalise personal terms with the player, who does not turn 17 until September.

McKinstry is regarded as one of the best young prospects in Scotland and has already been named on the substitute’s bench for the Motherwell first team this season.

Leeds’ plan is for the Scotland youth international to initially link up with their Under-23s next season, but manager Marcelo Bielsa has shown he is not afraid to give youth a chance at Elland Road after blooding a number of teenagers into his senior side plans this season.

In other Leeds United transfer news, Noel Whelan has exclusively told Football Insider his fears that these two Leeds players will QUIT.
