Exclusive: Leeds backed to secure another new deal after Phil Hay reveal
Darren Bent has urged Leeds United to get Barry Douglas tied down to a new contract as soon as possible in preparation for the Premier League.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Tottenham and England striker has lauded the 30-year-old for his “fantastic” display against Blackburn and insists it would be “sensible” to keep him tied down.
The Athletic’s Phil Hay reports that the board at Elland Road are likely to offer the Scotland international a contract extension, with his current deal set to expire next summer.
Bent believes that Leeds need to get things like contracts and transfers sorted out as soon as possible, suggesting it will give them an advantage in the Premier League next season.
Bent told Football Insider: “It’s sensible, he was very, very good against Blackburn when he came in, he was fantastic.
“What you want to do, you want to get these things tied up sooner rather than later. I always feel the teams that are better equipped in the Premier League, when they come up from the Championship, are the ones who get their business done early.

“It gives them a chance to work with what they’ve got and sort their situations out. It’s the ones that come in, get promoted, start scrambling around, sign the wrong characters, the wrong players and ultimately it ends up punishing them.
“If Leeds can sort out these situations now, as you said about Douglas, Jack Harrsion, Helder Costa’s signed – if they can sort these out now then all they’ve got to do is find additions that are going to make them better rather than scramble around to replace players they’ve had this season.”
Douglas has played 16 times across all competitions for Leeds this season, although he has made just five Championship starts.
The former Wolves man has a total of 42 games under his belt at Elland Road.
In other Leeds United news, Michael Brown has dropped a “sensational” transfer claim.
