Leeds United’s hopes of signing striking target Chris Martin from Derby County are over, Football Insider sources understand.
Leeds have made enquiries about signing Martin on loan during this month’s transfer as Thomas Christiansen looks to add to his attacking options at Elland Road.
However, a well-placed source has told Football Insider that Derby do not want to deal with Leeds over Martin as they do not want to strengthen an opponent who is also chasing promotion to the Premier League and would prefer to loan him out to a side that is not a direct rival.
It means Leeds are now going to have look elsewhere if they are to bring in a new striker before the close of the transfer window at the end of the month.
Leeds have struggled up front in recent weeks with Kemar Roofe being employed in a striking role for the majority of the season, while loan signing Pierre-Michel Lasogga has struggled after initially impressing upon his arrival from Hamburg.
A number of other clubs are weighing up a move for Martin with the likes of Reading and Sunderland looking to bring in a new striker to boost their survival fights.
Martin has found himself playing a bit-part role for Derby this season under Gary Rowett and the recent arrival of Cameron Jerome from Norwich has pushed him further down the pecking order at the iPro Stadium.
In other Leeds United transfer news, Football Insider can exclusively reveal Victor Orta is working on a sensational deal to prise a star player from the club’s bitter rivals.
