Leeds United have registered their interest in signing Birmingham City sensation Jordan James, sources have told Football Insider.

The Yorkshire club are in the market for a new central midfielder following Glen Kamara's £8.4 million transfer to French side Rennes and see James, 20, as a potential replacement.

Sources have told Football Insider that Leeds have a "strong interest" in James but face competition from an unnamed Premier League club for his signature.

Birmingham could be forced to reluctantly sell their prize asset after a heavy round of spending this summer following their relegation to League One.

Leeds United want to sign Birmingham City wonderkid Jordan James

James may only be 20-years-old but he's already made 105 appearances and scored 10 goals for his boyhood club.

Last season was his most fruitful despite Birmingham's eventual relegation from the Championship, scoring eight goals in 47 appearances in all competitions.

The youngster is now a fully-fledged Wales international having made his debut in their Euro 2024 qualifier against Croatia alongside Leeds player Ethan Ampadu and Joe Rodon.

Determined to secure promotion back to England's second tier at the first time of asking, Birmingham have already spent £11.7 million on eight new players.

In stark contrast, Leeds are yet to get going in the transfer window having only signed Rodon and Jayden Bogle despite losing 16 first-team players either permanently or on loan.

There might yet be more departures from Elland Road this transfer window but the club don't plan on making it easy.
