Exclusive: Leeds player savaged by some fans tipped to start next three matches

Noel Whelan has tipped Patrick Bamford to spearhead the Leeds United attack in their three Championship matches before the next international break.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider editor Wayne Veysey, the ex-United forward expects Marcelo Bielsa to stick with the forward despite growing calls for him to be axed.

A significant section of Leeds fans have called on social media and other forums for Bamford to be dropped from the starting XI and replaced by on-loan Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah.

Frustration has grown with Bamford in recent weeks, particularly in light of Saturday’s 1-1 home draw against Derby County in which he missed a number of excellent scoring opportunities.

“I don’t see Bamford being dropped,” Whelan told Football Insider. “Bielsa is very predictable about his selection and game plan. There isn’t a plan ‘B’, just do plan ‘A’ better.

“Bamford is doing what his manager wants him to do. Eddie Nketiah is instinctive inside the box and is a different type of player to Bamford, but can he match Bamford’s work rate and hold the ball up like Bamford?

“Bamford’s work rate is excellent, he’s running into channels, pulling defenders out of position, Bielsa will be happy with him.

“Leeds have three more games before the international break and, injuries permitting, I don’t see the striker situation changing.”

Bamford has started all eight of Leeds’ Championship matches this season, while Nketiah is still waiting for his full league debut despite four times for his loan club.

Leeds travel to Charlton Athletic on Saturday before hosting West Brom at Elland Road next Tuesday, and then visit Millwall on Saturday week ahead of the fortnight-long international break.
