Darren Bent believes that Barry Douglas could turn down a move to Celtic to remain at Leeds United this summer.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former England striker has suggested that the left-back will want to test himself in the Premier League next season after the Whites’ title-winning campaign.
Sky Sports report that the 30-year-old is high up on Celtic’s shortlist of potential left-back signings as they look to replace Boli Bolingoli at Parkhead.
Douglas, whose contract is set to run until next summer, played second fiddle to Stuart Dallas last season and made just six starts in 15 Championship appearances.
However, Bent believes that the Scotland international will want the chance to prove himself in England’s top flight and could turn down the opportunity to move to a Champions League outfit chasing 10 consecutive titles.
Bent told Football Insider: “The only difficulty is he’s got a year left on his contract and it’s a year in the Premier League.
“He might not play as much but everyone wants to play in the Premier League first and foremost so he might look at that situation and come back from pre-season raring to go and say: ‘I want game time in the Premier League.’
“So if he was at the end of his contract then I’d say he’d jump at it but I’m pretty sure that he’s going to want a crack at the Premier League and then maybe assess the situation as he’s going through the season.”
Douglas, who also won promotion from the Championship with Wolves in 2018, is yet to make a Premier League appearance after he was sold to Leeds that summer.
He has a total of 43 games under his belt for the Whites to date.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites have been told to sign a 22-year-old after a £2million bid was reported.
