Exclusive: Leeds plot swoop to sign Brentford 27-yr-old, rival £2m bid submitted

EXCLUSIVE By Pete O’Rourke

Leeds are ready to rival Celtic for the signature of Brentford midfielder Romaine Sawyers, Football Insider understands.

Celtic have been leading the chase for Sawyers during this transfer window and have already seen a bid of around £2million rejected by Brentford for the 27-year-old.

A Leeds source has told Football Insider that Marcelo Bielsa is an admirer of the Bees captain and regards him as someone who can add creativity to the Leeds midfield next season as they look to go one better than last season and win promotion to the Premier League.

Sawyers is entering the final year of his contract at Brentford and a number of clubs north and south of the border have been monitoring his situation at Griffin Park.

The versatile midfielder, who joined Brentford from Walsall three years ago, made his name in English football in attacking roles before mainly settling into a deeper central role in the last year.

Brentford are keen to keep hold of Sawyers as they look to challenge for promotion next season.

But the Championship outfit, who signed Pontus Jansson for £5.5million at the start of this week, could be forced to cash-in on the midfielder before the close of the transfer rather than risk allowing him to run down his contract.

Sawyers made 41 league starts among 46 appearances for Brentford last season and took over as the regular captain last autumn.

In other Leeds United news, it can be REVEALED that the mass Elland Road is intensifying as another senior player agrees terms with new club.
