Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa

Kevin Phillips has tipped Gaetano Berardi to sign a new contract at Leeds United even if he is offered more game time at another club.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former Sunderland and West Brom striker suggested the 31-year-old will want to play in the Premier League with the Whites knowing how much it means to the club.

Berardi is out of contract this June but The Athletic‘s Phil Hay revealed that the club and Marcelo Bielsa want the centre-half at Elland Road next season, regardless of promotion.

If the Championship restarts the Swiss defender is expected to sign a short-term deal to ensure he is available for the remaining fixtures that are almost certain to run into July.

When asked by Football Insider if he believed that Berardi would sign a contract at the club, Phillips said: “He has been at the club a while and I would want to play in the Premier League with them.

“It is a difficult one. I had a similar situation when I left West Brom for Birmingham. They offered me the two-year contract which I was looking for.

“He might have the promise of more game time at another club but you want to be in the Premier League. Especially if you had been at Leeds for a long time.

“If the offer suits him and there is the opportunity to play in the Premier League I am sure he will opt for that.”

Berardi has been limited to just 20 appearances this season with Ben White and Liam Cooper Marcelo Bielsa’s preferred centre-back partnership.

Goalkeeper Will Huffer is the only other player out of contract at Elland Road this summer.

In other Leeds United news, it can be REVEALED that club has been offered Everton forward who is surplus to requirements at Goodison Park.
