Exclusive: Leeds make approach to sign Sunderland rising star for 6-figure fee

Leeds United are looking to take advantage of Sunderland’s troubles by signing rising star Daniel Neil, Football Insider can reveal.

The League One giants have lost multiple highly prized youngsters in recent times and Neil, 18, could be the latest to quit this summer.

A Leeds source has told Football Insider the club are trying to lure the England youth international this summer and have already made an approach.

United’s recruitment team believe the goalscoring central midfielder is capable of making the step up from Under-23s football to playing in the Premier League.

Neil is available this summer for a six-figure fee that would be paid to Sunderland for his training and development costs.

The source explained there is also interest in him from two clubs already in the Premier League.

Neil has yet to play for the Sunderland first team but was a regular for their Under-23s before the March lockdown.

He has already played 29 matches at that level after being a regular goalscorer from midfield for the Under-18s.

Sunderland have seen a vast number of top academy products quit their ranks in the last two years.

Among those, Josh Maja and Balu Mumba were the most high-profile departures but they have also lost Sam Greenwood to Arsenal, Luca Stephenson to Liverpool and Logan Pye and Jordan Hugill to Man United.

In other news, a senior Leeds United man is in advanced talks to join the club’s big rivals.
