Leeds United have submitted a second bid for Brighton centre-back Haydon Roberts, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.
The Seagulls knocked back the opening offer from the Yorkshire giants for the teenager, 18, last week.
A Leeds source has told Football Insider that the club have returned to the negotiating table with a new offer for England youth international of around £800,000.
It comes with Roberts in the final year of a contract that is due to expire next summer.
Brighton do not want to lose the youngster, who they regard highly and capable of cracking it at first-team level in the Premier League.
Leeds’ pursuit of Roberts comes as they try to steal a march of rival clubs after speculation linking RB Leipzig, Derby County and Brentford with him.
Roberts has followed Leeds 2019-20 loan sensation Ben White off the production line of talent at the Amex Stadium.
He has been compared to White, who was the subject of a £30million rejected offer from United earlier in the window before signing a new Brighton contract.
Roberts made his second appearance for Brighton in their 4-0 EFL Cup thrashing of Portsmouth last week.
He came off the bench to replace Joel Veltman after 22 minutes, adding to his first appearances made in the same competition in September of last year.
Roberts marked what was a memorable senior debut aged just 17 with a goal in a defeat to Aston Villa.
His game time shows how highly he is regarded by Graham Potter and his coaching staff.
It also demonstrates Brighton’s desire to show the youngster there is a clear pathway from their academy to first team.
The teenager has graduated from the Brighton academy to not only play for the senior side but also earn more than 20 caps at England youth level
