Exclusive: Leeds & West Brom race to sign 26-yr-old defender, £6.3m will seal deal

West Brom have joined Leeds United in the race for KAA Gent defender Milad Mohammadi, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

Both newly promoted sides are interested in the 26-year-old as they look to bolster their defences ahead of the new Premier League season.

A recruitment source has Football Insider that Leeds are to be rivalled by the Baggies in their pursuit of the left-back.

West Brom boss Slaven Bilic is in the market for a new left-sided defender this summer with Kieran Gibbs reported to be surplus to requirements at The Hawthorns.

Mohammadi has been a long-term target for the Baggies after Football Insider first revealed their interest in the player back in July 2018.

He was named in the Jupiler Pro League’s team of the season for 2019/20 after a hugely impressive campaign for Gent.

He made 24 appearances for the Belgian outfit across all competitions before the season was cancelled amid the Coronavirus pandemic.

Football Insider revealed that the Iranian defender would cost £6.3million (€7million) when Marcelo Bielsa’s side’s interest was detailed earlier this month.

The versatile full-back joined Gent on a free transfer last summer from Akhmat Grozny after his contract with the Russian outfit expired.

He is a regular starter for the Iranian national side, having featured at the 2018 World Cup as well every one of his country’s last 10 matches.

Stuart Dallas was Marcelo Bielsa’s first-choice left-back for the 2019/20 campaign and his performances earned him Noel Whelan’s Player of the Year nomination.

The Northern Ireland international missed just one Championship game last season and scored an impressive five times.

The Argentine boss also has Ezgjan Alioski and Scotland star Barry Douglas to call upon on the left-hand side but both are out of contract in 12 months time.

In other Leeds United news, Danny Mills has told Football Insider that attacker is “too expensive” for Whites after Bielsa transfer U-turn.
