Exclusive: Liverpool close to agreeing new deal with 'next Wayne Rooney'

Noel Whelan has suggested Liverpool teenager Harvey Elliott could become the next David Beckham or Wayne Rooney.

The former Leeds United striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claims the 17-year-old is “learning from the best” at Anfield and is destined to become a future star.

As revealed by Football Insider, the young attacker has agreed the terms of a new contract with the Merseysiders after a breakthrough.

An official announcement is expected to be made over the summer and the Reds are set to snub any approaches from clubs looking to take the starlet on loan next season.

Elliott, who celebrated his birthday earlier this month, arrived from Fulham last July and has hugely impressed in his maiden season.

Whelan believes training with the wealth of talent in Jurgen Klopp’s squad will help the teenager become one of the best.

“There is not many better 17-year-olds out there,” he told Football Insider. “They realised this when they signed him.

“We watched him in the FA Cup games and he is a real talent. He has a bright future ahead.

“When he has got that you have to reward these players. You have to keep them there and nurture them.

“He is going to be training with Mane, Salah, Firimno Origi – all of these wide players. He is learning from the best. They can only turn a player with this kid’s ability into a future star and that is what Liverpool are hoping.

“We always need players like that for England, especially with the talent he has at such a young age. Could he be the next Beckham or Rooney?”

Elliott has hugely impressed in his seven first-team appearances for the Reds this campaign.

In the Premier League 2, UEFA Youth League and EFL Trophy the attacker has scored four goals and provided nine assists.

In other Liverpool news, Kevin Phillips has tipped 26-year-old to replace Adrian at Anfield next season.
