Liverpool have made a move to sign West Brom striker Jovan Malcolm by the end of December, Football Insider can reveal.

The 16-year-old is firmly on their radar after he blew away their academy coaches with a stunning four-goal showing against their Under-18s last weekend.

A Liverpool source has told Football Insider that the club are doing preliminary checks on Malcolm and his interest in a transfer after learning he does not turn 17 until next month.

West Brom cannot tie the wonderkid down to a professional deal until his 17th birthday, which opens the door to rival clubs to secure him for a cut-price compensation fee.

The Championship leaders know they face a major battle to hang on to one of their star youngsters.

Malcolm is regarded as one of the brightest prospects in his age group in the country and is catching the eye of the Premier League elite.

Liverpool are not the only leading club who are keeping close tabs on him and ready to strike a deal before he turns 17.

Malcolm has scored seven goals and provided three assists in nine Under-18s games so far this season.

He provided the most convincing case for his talent by banging in four goals in an impressive 6-3 win for West Brom against Liverpool Under-18s last weekend.

It means his situation at the Hawthorns has been thrown into considerable doubt ahead of the January window.

West Brom do want to lose Malcolm after highly rated youngsters Morgan Rogers and Louie Barry quit to sign for Manchester City and Barcelona respectively in the last year.
