Paul Robinson was shocked to hear Chelsea had leapfrogged Liverpool in the race to sign Timo Werner after it appeared “nailed on” that the German would sign move to Anfield.
However, the former England number one, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, suggested the Reds may be able to sign “three top quality players” for the same price this summer.
Jurgen Klopp has since ruled out the Reds competing with Frank Lampard’s side for the Germany international’s signature.
Attentions now appeared to have turned to Barcelona winger, Ousmane Dembele, with the club keen to tie up a loan-to-buy agreement.
When asked by Football Insider if Klopp would be frustrated that Chelsea have seemingly won the race for Werner, Robinson said: “I was surprised because it looked like it was nailed on for Liverpool.
“Werner is a top quality player and a real goalscorer. He will be a great asset to the Premier League and it looks like it will be Chelsea.
“But Klopp has got a lot of quality there and they will not have trouble attracting players.
“In the current market you might be able to get two or three top quality players for £50million. Liverpool might have weighed it up and think they can get three for that price in the upcoming window.”
Klopp, as quoted by the Independent, said: “How do I discuss with the players about things like salary waivers and on the other hand buy a player for £50-60m? We’d have to explain.
Werner has scored 31 goals and contributed 13 assists in 41 appearances for RB Leipzig this season.
